Is suburban living the best location for you? Here are the pros and cons.

If you are looking for a new place to live, you generally can choose to live in an urban, suburban, semi-rural, or rural environment. Maryland has all of these areas, even though it is a relatively small state! Is living in the suburbs right for you? We shall look at the pros and cons of suburban living right here. If a new construction home is up your alley, Ameri-Star Homes is happy to help you in central Maryland.

What Are the Suburbs?

The suburbs are the neighborhoods and communities on the outskirts of cities. In Maryland, the major cities would be Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. The general characteristics of a suburb include streets lined with single-family homes that have front and back yards. These housing areas are surrounded by local amenities and have access to major roads.

Benefits of Living in the Suburbs

  • Outdoor space: While some suburban houses are large, with hardly any space between each other, others have enough outdoor space to create a comfortable and private outdoor sanctuary.
  • Quieter and calmer living: The suburbs are quieter and less hectic than the city. If you are looking for a more peaceful environment, the suburbs could be for you.
  • Community: Plenty of people living in the suburbs hardly talk to their neighbors. At the same time, there are others who make friends and have community events with their neighbors, like block parties, cookoffs, and fairs. Even though it is quieter, you can still meet new people!
  • Safety: Cities can have bad areas, and the rural countryside can be isolated. Some suburbs are safer than others, but in general, suburbs can be safer areas to live.
  • More living space: You can’t generally find detached single-family homes in the city. The suburbs are great places to look for more living space!

Cons of Living in the Suburbs

  • Less to do: The suburbs can be isolating for single professionals or others looking for a more vibrant atmosphere. The suburbs don’t have all the amenities and attractions within a walking distance.
  • Need a car: In Maryland, you will need a car to travel if you live in the suburbs.
  • Further commute: If you need to travel to a major city to work, your commute times will naturally be longer, which can take up a lot more time and energy each day.
